Gabrielle HEALY

After my graduation in the summer of 2011, I returned to the Field Academy because I feel as if it’s an area where I can continue affect meaningful change on a personal level. This is for two reasons: The first is that I’m a huge news addict. At times the world I have grown up in can feel deeply hopeless. Remembering and participating in what the Field Academy does always helps me combat nihilism.  This community reminds me how powerful and capable human beings can be, given the opportunity.  The second reason regards how significant the project of re-imaging the structure and function of modern education is. Let me tell it to you straight: what the Field Academy does is incredibly challenging, and they execute it with grace and poise. The students, faculty, and administrators leave lasting impacts on the people and places they touch.

Education is not a one-way conduit between teacher and student at the Field Academy. The holistic strategies within this community are a way to bridge the gap between what teenagers are comfortable doing at this point in their lives, while also offering chances for genuine engagement and empowerment in the broader community. These opportunities are so rare. It was a privilege to be a student, and that privilege is continually extended to me as an alumnus.

Supporting the Field Academy is a way to invest in what youth can offer the world, and I hope you’ll join us in the effort.

Gabrielle was part of the first ever Field Academy expedition and has been a dedicated member of the alumni community ever since. She is currently a sophomore at Kenyon College in Ohio where she is a community advisor, a section editor of the Kenyon Collegian and an English major. This year, Gabrielle interned with WCAI, a public radio station near her home in MA. She also co-facilitated and taught a weekend long Field Academy program called "A Day in the Field" and spent an afternoon welcoming the 2015 student group into the Field Academy community.
