Program Summary
Educator retreats are workshops designed to support educators from diverse educational settings in exploring questions of field-based education, and social and environmental justice. There will be a facilitation team of 3-4 individuals for these retreats who will work together to teach frameworks, provide demonstration experiential lessons, mentor, and coach program participants as they work through their ideas. The facilitation team will be comprised of Field Academy faculty, Field Academy student alumni, and may include an outside facilitator to bring in additional experience and/or guest facilitators who may be contracted to run particular sessions. The workshop in Berkeley, CA (April 30-May3) is similar in content to the April and July Retreats in Maine and Vermont, but will not be residential.
Position Overview
Facilitators are expected to work as a team to lead these programs. Responsibilities include: co‐facilitating workshop sessions on place‐based education, curriculum design, identity and power in the context of educational work, real assessment, and logistics planning for teaching in the field; supporting participants’ curriculum design process through mentoring and coaching; fostering a welcoming and creative environment for a diverse cohort of educators that builds connections across difference; logistical prep and program implementation (managing gear and materials, occasional meal or snack preparation, clean-‐up, and managing transitions between sessions).
Student Facilitator Position Specifics
Student facilitators are an integral part of the facilitation team and will be involved equally in session and scope planning. Student facilitators may have additional or complementary responsibilities of planning one or multiple sessions including - but not limited to - student partnership, building student ownership, and/or their particular experience with field-based education from a student’s perspective. The student facilitator’s role in additional sessions will be determined in conversation with the rest of the facilitation team based on their experience and level of comfort.

Time Commitment
Ideally, the student facilitator will be available for two 90 minute conference calls prior to the program.
1) "Education for Social Change" facilitation dates (for prep, program, and debrief): April 16, noon - April 21, 6:00pm
2) "Field-Based Curriculum Design for School Settings" facilitation dates (for prep, program, and debrief): April 28, noon - May 3, 6:00pm
3) "Young Educator Camp for College Students and Recent College Graduates" facilitation dates (for prep, program, and debrief): July 3, 9am - July 11, 6:00pm
These timelines are negotiable for the student facilitator according to their schedule.
Compensation
Compensation for student facilitators working the entire program will be $75/day as a facilitation stipend. This may be negotiated according to student schedules.
Food and lodging are included and student facilitators will be reimbursed for travel.

- Creating a welcoming and supportive retreat space in which participants and facilitators can take risks, teach, and learn
- Preparing, leading, and co‐leading workshop sessions
- Modeling examples of place-based and community‐driven learning during the retreat
- One-on‐one and small group coaching and mentoring of participants during curriculum design sessions
- Upholding Field Academy risk management protocols at all times
- Preparing and serving meals as needed
- Managing gear, materials, and transitions between different activities
- Upholding the values and mission of the Field Academy
Successful candidates for this position will have:
- Experience successfully leading and/or facilitating diverse groups of people
- A desire to and comfortability in sharing about your experience/perspective as a Field Academy student
- Experience creating place-‐based educational experiences (either as a teacher, program director, student leader, or otherwise)
- A desire to teach and support educators as they develop and pursue their own ideas and curricular plans
- A commitment to, and experience with, opening up questions of identity, power, privilege, and accountability as they pertain to personal and professional growth and a personal willingness to reflect upon these questions
- A desire to work and lead in a team environment: enthusiasm for the work of co-‐ facilitation, experience giving and receiving feedback to colleagues, the desire and ability to work with leaders of different backgrounds and ages
- Adaptability and the ability to be responsive to a group’s needs in a changing environment
- Playfulness, a sense of humor, and a love of games and general revelry
- A firm commitment to, and passion for, the mission and values of the Field Academy

2) Fundraising Event job description
Join our staff the evening before the Field Academy's "A Day in the Field" fundraising event to plan a weekend of learning, fun, and celebration with all members of the Field Academy community. Help to facilitate a discussion about lobstering and ecology and communities of the Gulf of Maine with Field Academy supporters and friends. Help host a lobster bake on the shore on Saturday night. Co-plan and execute a fun photo scavenger hunt in Portland on Sunday.
We're looking for students who are excited about leading and engaging in discussions around issues impacting the communities around the Gulf of Maine, and are able to help us host a group of adults for the weekend. Must be comfortable with adults and willing to help out as needed. Must be excited about sharing the mission and values of the Field Academy with attendees.
